Tottenham Hotspurs hosts Aston Villa in the first of Sky Sports Premier League double header on Sunday. Ange Postecoglu and Unai Emery both favour high-octane, high pressing and a high line, entertaining the masses with attacking football. We are set for a mouthwatering tie at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Tottenham started the season in electric form, failing to lose any of their opening 10 games. However, after back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, Postecoglu is in unchartered territory as he tries to galvanise a stuttering side. Spurs won plenty of plaudits for their brave and adventurous response to going down to nine men against Chelsea, despite losing 4-1. Littered with injuries and suspensions, Tottenham were resilient away at Wolves before conceding two stoppage-time goals to leave the Molineux empty-handed. Alas, the North London outfit still occupy the Champions League spots, just two points off leaders Manchester City and one point clear of Sunday’s opponents Aston Villa heading into the weekend action.
Aston Villa have had a terrific start to the season, sitting in fifth place as they look to build on last season's Europa Conference League qualification. They have caught the eye with their high-risk high line, looking to press up the pitch and catch opponents offside. Their home form has been remarkable, winning six from six and scoring 23 goals in the process. The Villains boast the joint-best home record in the league with Liverpool. However, they have struggled on the road, picking up just seven points from six. Their points have come from wins at ten-man Chelsea and struggling Burnley, while also drawing with Wolves. The three away defeats came at the hands of Newcastle (5-1), Liverpool (3-0), and Nottingham Forest (2-0). Travelling away to a Tottenham side who have won four of their five home games, scoring 2+ in all these wins, may be a struggle for Villa.
Previous games between these sides have certainly provided entertainment, with at least two goals scored in the last 11 and at least three goals scored in seven of the last 11. The Villains did the double over Spurs last season, running out 2-0 winners in a heated game in North London on New Year's Day. The return leg was equally as heated, as Villa ran out 2-1 winners in a crucial match in the hunt for Europe at Villa Park. Douglas Luiz scored in both games. Villa got their revenge with the double last season, after Tottenham did the double the season before. A Son-Heung-Min hat-trick led Spurs to a 4-0 victory at Villa Park in 2022, after a Matt Targett own goal ensured a 2-1 victory for Tottenham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Interestingly, the last four games between the sides has seen both teams booked twice.
Having looked at data from previous meetings between the two sides who face on Sunday, we have highlighted some interesting statistics from the goals, cards and offside markets. These trends will help us decipher what is and isn't value in the betting markets.
Due to Tottenham’s home form and Aston Villa’s away form, Spurs odds present value. Another caveat to the bet is that Aston Villa have to travel 1513km to face Legia Warsaw in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night. Villa have lost four of their six away games on xG. Spurs have also won eight of the last 11 home games against Aston Villa, asserting their dominance over the Midlands side. Full back Destiny Udogie is back, further strengthening Tottenham’s back line. Given the data and reasonings presented, backing Tottenham to win 2-1 looks a good bet.
