Two injury- and suspension-ridden sides in Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United face off in North London for the latter of two Super Sunday games. Both clubs will be aiming for Champions League football and are three and four points off, respectively, at the time of writing.
In what should be a mouth-watering clash between two entertaining sides, we are here to preview the game with our predictions and betting tips.
Under the charming, charismatic Ange Postecoglu, Tottenham started the season in excellent form, winning eight and drawing two of their opening 10 league games.
However, an enthralling 4-1 defeat to rivals Chelsea, in which James Maddison and Micky Van De Ven limped off injured and Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off, looked to derail their season. 2-1 losses to Wolves and Aston Villa followed. The manner of defeat would have concerned Postecoglu, with Spurs taking the lead in both games.
Against Manchester City, it looked like Tottenham would blow an early lead for the fourth consecutive game, but a 90th-minute Dejan Kulusevski header secured a 3-3 draw for the visitors.
Newcastle had an inconsistent start to the season, with a 5-1 victory over Aston Villa being followed up by a trio of losses. Eddie Howe's side do however, come into this game full of confidence after a 1-1 draw at PSG was sandwiched in between 4-1 and 1-0 home wins over Chelsea and Manchester United.
Callum Wilson, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Matt Targett, Nick Pope, Sean Longstaff, and Sven Botman are still out injured, while Sandro Tonali misses the season through suspension.
However, this hasn't deterred Eddie Howe's side, with experienced captain Jamaal Lascelles and teen midfielder Lewis Miley stepping up to perform.
Games between these two sides have been very entertaining in recent years. Last season, Newcastle did the double over Tottenham. In the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, first-half goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron guided Newcastle to a 2-1 win. The return game saw Newcastle go 5-0 up in 21 minutes, winning the game 6-1.
The season before followed a similar pattern. Tottenham won the away game 3-2, with a trio of first-half goals, before thrashing their visitors 5-1 in the return. The season before saw two score draws.
With the previous head-to-head games showing these two sides provide entertainment, we will be looking at some statistical highlights to help us with bets for this affair.
With both teams riddled with injuries, I am siding with Tottenham Hotspur to win the game. Newcastle have a crucial Champions League tie with AC Milan on Wednesday, so Eddie Howe's side may have one eye on that game.
Our Betting Tip for Today: Over 3.0 goal line
Tottenham have a bigger squad than Newcastle due to their injuries. They also do not have European football to contend with, so they are able to keep their team fresh and ready. With the return of Cristian Romero to the lineup, Spurs will feel more confident in their defensive ability.
Before facing Everton, Newcastle had picked up just five points on their travels—a 2-2 draw at Wolves and an 8-0 drubbing of Sheffield United. They have one of the worst away records in the league, and Spurs will look to exploit this.
