Both of these sides won their opening fixtures so the pressure is somewhat reduced on matchday two. A point apiece would almost certainly send both nations through to the last 16.
Turkey vs Georgia was arguably the pick of an outstanding bunch of first-round group matches. Both sides attacked from the get-go in a raucous atmosphere - each contributing to a game that had everything.
Mert Muldur and Arda Guler put themselves forward for goal of the tournament with a pair of stunning strikes. Georgia’s spirit never waned and the European Championship debutants came so close to snatching a point late on before the Turks’ third deep into stoppage time sent fans into delirium.
Having lost every game at Euro 2020 and failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, there wasn’t a great deal of cheerfulness surrounding the Turkey national team when Vincenzo Montella took over as manager. But now, inspired by a new generation of young talent, there is reason for optimism.
Portugal were a popular selection for outright bettors heading into Euro 2024, but that was not necessarily reflected in their 2-1 triumph over the Czech Republic.
Ultimately, Roberto Martinez’s men got over the line and he won’t be too concerned if his side peak later on in the competition. What he must consider is whether the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo is helping or hurting his team.
The Portuguese midfielders seemed too keen to try and find Ronaldo, even if it meant forcing it through. Lots of attacks broke down because of this and we didn’t see the free-flowing display that their individual quality should have yielded.
Previous manager Fernando Santos phased Ronaldo out of his plans towards the end of his tenure. Up to now, Martinez remains convinced that the 39-year-old belongs in his best XI.
Turkey can’t seem to avoid Portugal at the European Championships. In their maiden finals appearance in 1996, Fernando Couto’s volley downed the Turks at the City Ground in Nottingham.
At Euro 2000, Turkey advanced to the quarter-finals but were down to 10 men after half an hour against Portugal and comfortably beaten thanks to a Nuno Gomes double.
Eight years later, Turkey had their best-ever run in the competition as they reached the semi-finals. That all came despite a 2-0 defeat by Portugal in Group A.
The Crescent-Stars’ most recent loss at the hands of Portugal was a significant one. Goals from Otávio, Diogo Jota, and Matheus Nunes handed A Seleção das Quinas a 3-1 victory in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final.
Portugal come into this match-up having never lost a competitive fixture to Turkey. They have a perfect record against their opponents at major tournaments, and are looking to make it back-to-back wins in the first two games of the Euros group phase for the first time since 2008.
Things didn’t fully click for Portugal against the Czech Republic. Martinez may find a solution but given that a point would be a decent outcome for both sides and Turkey won’t be shy of posing a threat, the best bet is to take the Turks with a one-goal head start on the Asian handicap.
The Portuguese have the class to blow Turkey away but their odds to do so look a touch too short. The Turks have several individuals who can produce moments of brilliance, and confidence will be sky-high after their winning start.
Portugal came into the tournament in fine fettle in front of goal but it’s been a different story at the other end. Until the 3-0 success against Ireland in their final warm-up match, they had conceded two goals in four consecutive matches against Sweden, Slovenia, Finland, and Croatia.
The Crescent-Stars may play more within themselves than they did against Georgia, but Portugal will offer up chances. Neither outfit are expected to make many, if any changes to the starting lineups from matchday one but it may only be a matter of time before Goncalo Ramos or Diogo Jota are given a more significant role in the Portugal team.
