Liverpool survived a minor scare on Boxing Day as they had to come from behind to beat Leicester City. The next opponent on their march towards the title is a West Ham side that is unbeaten in four matches.
Julen Lopetegui won’t want the festive period to end. He has gone from being odds-on to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job to now sitting in a more respectable 13th place, above Manchester United and level on points with Tottenham Hotspur.
The former Spain and Real Madrid head coach still has some work to do to earn the admiration of West Ham fans completely, and that might be tricky over the next two weeks with league fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester City before a trip to Aston Villa in the FA Cup.
Jarrod Bowen’s form has been a big factor in the Irons’ upturn in results. The England forward, who netted the Boxing Day winner at Southampton, has scored two and assisted two during the four-game unbeaten run.
Liverpool keep getting asked questions, and they appear to have all the answers up to now.
It was far from a vintage performance at Anfield versus Leicester on Thursday. Arne Slot’s team were behind for 40 minutes, but while it wasn’t coming off for Mohamed Salah, the Reds have so much firepower that it didn’t matter.
The Egyptian did, of course, get his customary goal in the second half, taking him to 16 for the campaign along with 12 assists.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s yellow card was the only downside to the victory over the Foxes. The midfielder only came on with 13 minutes left, but quickly went into the referee’s notebook and is suspended for the trip to East London.
The Reds lost each of their last three fixtures at Upton Park - twice in the league and once in the FA Cup when Angelo Ogbonna scored a 120th-minute extra-time winner against a much-changed Liverpool side.
Fortunes changed once West Ham moved to the London Stadium. The first H2H in the Olympic Park saw the visitors win 4-0 in May 2017. The Reds also won comfortably in Stratford six months later, as Salah scored twice in a 4-1 triumph.
The Irons’ only home victory against Liverpool since the move came in November 2021, when a 3-2 success dented Jurgen Klopp’s team’s title hopes.
Liverpool boast the superior recent head-to-head record but clean sheets have been hard to come by for them against West Ham.
A big reason for that is Bowen, who loves playing against the Reds.
Curtis Jones will surely line up for Liverpool again with Szoboszlai out, and the best bet is for the midfielder to register a shot on target.
By making it 2-1 to Liverpool against Leicester on Boxing Day, Jones became the fifth Reds player to reach three league goals for the campaign.
Each of his efforts have been important. The 23-year-old scored the winner at home to Chelsea in October, and also netted at St James’ Park as the Reds earned what now looks like a decent point.
Jones’ strike versus Leicester was exactly the type of goal that managers love to see from their midfielders. He was involved in the build-up and then arrived in the six-yard box to get on the end of a cutback and poke it in.
It was the eighth time in 13 starts this season that Jones had recorded a shot on target. His more advanced role with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister playing deeper gave the England international plenty of licence to get forward. He should be afforded a similar luxury at the London Stadium, and so odds-against for another shot on target looks big.
