This is a League One side versus a Premier League outfit for a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup. It wasn’t too long ago that the Latics were a Premier League side themselves, but after a few years of uncertainty, they will be looking to cause a huge upset in front of a near-sell-out crowd at the DW Stadium. Both teams have lifted the famous trophy. Wigan won it in 2013 when they defeated Manchester City, while the Red Devils have won the FA Cup 12 times with their last win being in 2016 against Crystal Palace.
Things may not have been kind to Wigan and their supporters off the field, but on it, they get down to business and continue to battle. They are currently 17th in League One with 27 points after starting the campaign on minus eight points. Their recent form in the league has not been fantastic, although they stopped a three-game losing streak with four points from six in their last two matches.
Manchester United are fully expected to win this FA Cup tie inside 90 minutes, although it wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world if they lost to Wigan. United are a Jekyll and Hyde team and you are unsure which team will turn up. They looked back on track when they hit back from 2-0 to beat Aston Villa, but they were awful in their loss away at Nottingham Forest. It must be frustrating for their supporters. In all competitions, United have won just one of their last five matches and they have failed to score in three of them. That is not the form of a team that is playing with confidence. Defeat for Erik Ten Hag’s men could see the Dutchman pay the price with his job.
Due to Wigan’s demise on and off the field in recent years, these two have not met in a competitive match since 2017. This was an FA Cup game at Old Trafford in which United ran out comfortable 4-0 winners. The Red Devils have won 19 of their 20 matches against the Latics, with Wigan’s only win being a 1-0 success at the DW Stadium in 2012 – a game that subsequently cost United the Premier League title. The Red Devils have scored four or more goals in four of their last seven matches against Wigan.
FA Cup upsets happen, and we love watching them. In terms of the sizes of each club, the Latics beating United would be a massive shock, but having the Red Devils as a scalp is not as big nowadays as it was 15 years ago. Check out these stats and best betting odds ahead of the game on Monday.
Our Betting Tip for Today- Wigan Athletic to win 1-0 – 28/1 @ Bet365
Manchester United are clear favourites to win this game and anything else than a comfortable win will not be tolerated by the fan base. They are available at 2/9 to win the tie in normal time. Wigan are massive 12/1 underdogs, but stranger things have happened in the FA Cup. The draw after 90 minutes can be backed at 5/1
Now, all the facts and past results point in Manchester United’s favour. They have scored 21 goals in their last seven matches against Wigan, with the Latics scoring just once. There is just something about a Monday night game under the lights at the DW Stadium. Back in February 2018, Will Grigg scored the only goal of the game as the Latics knocked out Manchester City on a Monday evening. The stadium was rocking that night – as it will be on Monday – and I am expecting lightning to strike twice with Wigan knocking out another team from Manchester by a single goal.
