Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea go head to head at Molineux on Christmas Eve in what looks to be a feisty festive fixture. Both sides will be looking to claim a valuable three points ahead of the notoriously busy festive period in English football.
The last five games in the Premier League have thrown up a number of results for Gary O’Neill’s Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the Midlands side picking up four points from a possible 15.
London has not been a happy hunting ground at all in the last five games for Wolves. They have visited the capital three times in this period and returned to Wolverhampton empty handed on each occasion. Losses to Fulham, Arsenal and most recently, West Ham in those trips to London have left Wolves in 13th place. On the bright side, Wolves’ home form has been good recently, picking up four points in between those visits to London.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea, like opponents Wolves, have had a mixed set of results in their last five games. The Blues started off December perfectly with a battling 3-2 home victory against Brighton.
The next two games for Chelsea showed a dip in form as they lost back to back away games at the hands of Manchester United and Everton, 2-1 and 2-0 respectively. The results have picked up since though, as the Blues responded with a comfortable 2-0 victory over strugglers Sheffield United. Most recently, Chelsea qualified for the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a penalty shoot-out win against Newcastle.
Since Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League, these sides have met ten times in the league.
Each team has triumphed over the other three times and the other four fixtures have been draws. Last season’s fixtures saw the team’s win one game apiece against each other, with the home side winning on each occasion. The most notable recent meeting was in 2019 when Chelsea triumphed 5-2 over Wolves, in the only game out of the last 10 between these two in which the away side was the victor. Mauricio Pochettino’s team will be hoping to replicate that result in Sunday’s game.
As mentioned before, of the six wins in the 10 most recent meetings, five of those were to the home side and, if this game is to follow the pattern then all signs point towards a Wolves victory. Additionally, each side’s form backs this statement up, with Wolves unbeaten in their last six home games and Chelsea with three losses on the spin away from home.
With the information analysed, it seems as though backing Wolves to win could be worth a punt. The history of the fixture supports this, as does the recent league form of each team.
As has been mentioned previously, all the statistics and information surrounding this fixture point logically towards a Wolves win. Despite losing their first two home games of the season, Wolves are yet to taste defeat at Molineux since and have managed to get the home faithful behind them and turn it into a fortress.
Chelsea have also struggled away from home of late, losing their last three. In those three games, the Blues were considerably weak defensively, conceding eight goals and scoring just two. From a betting point of view, backing a Wolves win could be seen as somewhat of a longshot but form and history favours them. On Bet 365, Wolverhampton Wanderers currently sit at odds of 3.60 to triumph in their game against Chelsea and present the most value.
