Hope has been restored at Wolverhampton Wanderers after new boss Vitor Pereira kicked off his tenure with an important win. Manchester United remain inconsistent but boast a superb recent H2H record against the Old Gold.
Wolves’ 3-0 triumph at the King Power Stadium ended a run of four straight defeats and offered some vindication, in the short term at least, for their decision to relieve Gary O'Neil of his duties and replace him with a seasoned veteran manager.
Pereira’s name was chanted by the travelling supporters on Saturday, which the Portuguese described as “a fantastic feeling”. He named eight native Portuguese speakers in his first XI, and Wolves fans will hope he can get the best out of that talented contingent.
Goncalo Guedes, who has underachieved at Molineux, registered a goal and an assist. Matheus Cunha also scored and was given the captain’s armband in the second half.
Manchester United have been brought back down to earth after their come-from-behind victory at the Etihad Stadium a week ago.
Their Carabao Cup exit on Thursday was a disappointment but nothing compared to the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth at the weekend. Ruben Amorim became the second consecutive United boss to lose by that scoreline at home to the Cherries.
Marcus Rashford has been excluded from the squad for the last three matches while Alejandro Garnacho, who was also left out of the Manchester derby, made cameo appearances in the losses to Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth.
Kobbie Mainoo’s first Premier League goal for Manchester United was the winner in a 4-3 victory for the Red Devils at Wolves in February.
The Old Gold had scored in the 85th and 95th minute to make it 3-3 that night, but Mainoo’s stunning strike made it eight wins in 10 meetings for United against the West Midlands outfit.
United have won all of their league visits to Molineux in the 2020s, while Wolves’ only success during this decade came in January 2022 when a Joao Moutinho effort earned them all three points at Old Trafford. The last time they beat the Red Devils at home was in 2019.
Last season’s seven-goal thriller was an anomaly in meetings between Wolves and Man United. Ten of their previous 11 encounters had seen two goals or fewer.
Both teams have been poor defensively this season, so perhaps another high-scoring fixture is on the cards.
Matches at Molineux tend to involve plenty of goals. United are the ideal dance partner for that trend to continue, so the best bet is for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals.
Wolves have conceded at least twice in all but one of their home fixtures this season, with the only exception being their win over Southampton.
Pereira may be able to turn that around but with their lack of depth at the back coupled with some important injuries, a clean sheet against United looks like a tall order.
The Red Devils don’t look convincing defensively either. They have let in 14 goals in six outings in all competitions, and Matthijs de Ligt’s availability remains questionable having missed the last two matches with illness.
Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals has landed in seven of eight at Molineux in 2024-25, and four of United’s last five in all competitions.
United did everything except score last time out against Bournemouth. They generated 2.26 xG from 23 shots but gave up far too many quality chances at the other end.
