At the start of the season, you would have been forgiven for thinking that this game on January 6 would be a relegation six-pointer. Wolves are indeed in a relegation fight, but Nottingham Forest have their sights set on something better.
Wolves have not had the best of starts to the Premier League season, but their recent form has given them reason to believe they have a bright future.
Manager Gary O’Neil was sacked on December 15 following their 2-1 loss at home to fellow strugglers Ipswich Town.
He was replaced by Vitor Pereira on December 19 and he has overseen three matches as their new manager. In his three games, he has won two and drawn one.
His first win as Wolves boss came in a 3-0 victory over Leicester City on December 22. He backed that up with a stunning 2-0 win over Manchester United on Boxing Day, before a 2-2 draw away at Tottenham Hotspur.
A new manager usually sees an upturn in form and Wolves fans will be hoping this recent form continues as they currently sit in 17th place just one point outside the relegation places.
Pereira doesn’t have a full squad to choose from with the likes of Mario Lemina, Pablo Sarabia, Boubacar Traore, Toti Gomez and Sasa Kalajdzic all injured with Matheus Cunha suspended.
Nottingham Forest are just one of six English teams that have tasted glory in the European Cup or Champions League as it is known now.
The Reds won it in 1979 and 1980 under Brian Clough and if they carry on the way they have been, they could qualify for the top European competition for the first time since 1980-81 when they were knocked out as holders in the first round at the hands of CSKA Sofia.
Forest have a long way to go until they secure qualification to the Champions League, but at the moment they are in third place behind Arsenal and leaders Liverpool.
Forest are currently unbeaten in their last five Premier League matches. Their last defeat came at the hands of champions Manchester City.
Since that 3-0 defeat, Forest have not dropped any points thanks to wins over Manchester United, Aston Villa, Brentford, Spurs and Everton.
Former England international Callum Hudson-Odoi picked up a knock on Boxing Day and he will be given as much time as possible to prove his fitness.
Wolves and Forest have met many times over the years with the Wanderers winning 36 of their 81 meetings, while Forest have been victorious on 26 occasions.
These two played out a 1-1 draw at the start of the season in August with Chris Wood opening the scoring for Forest before Jean-Ricner Bellegarde levelled two minutes later.
The last five meetings in all competitions between these two teams have ended in a draw. Forest last won away from home against Wolves in 2018 when they were both in the Championship. Kieran Dowell and Ben Osborn scored in a 2-0 success.
Wolves might be unbeaten in three games, but they are still just one point outside the relegation places. They will need to keep this form up if they are to start climbing the ladder away from danger.
Forest fans are living the dream this season. They found themselves in second place heading into the New Year and only dropped to third when Arsenal beat Brentford on Wednesday. This run will not last forever, but they are in the mix for the time being.
Nottingham Forest are clear favourites for this game, just because they are 14 places and 21 points better off than Wolves.
The Reds are the 5/4 favourites with Betano to claim all three points. Wolves can be backed at 2/1 to make it three wins from four, while the draw is available at 12/5.
It is always good when a team pushes the so-called big four and upsets the form table when it comes to qualifying for the Champions League. Aston Villa and Newcastle United have both done it in recent years, maybe it’s time for Forest to be the next in line.
During this run of five successive wins, Forest have scored 10 goals and kept two clean sheets. They most definitely mean business.
Former Manchester United striker Anthony Elanga has scored three goals in that run and his run of scoring in three consecutive games came to an end in the 2-0 win at Everton.
The 22-year-old Sweden international has scored just those three goals this season, maybe now is his time to prove he is a Premier League striker.
We are backing him to add to his current goal tally with an anytime goal with both teams scoring in a victory for Forest.
