After their triumph in the European Conference League, expectations were high for West Ham heading into the 2023–24 campaign.
David Moyes' side have started the season well, sitting in ninth place as well as topping their Europa League group after five games. However, the Irons will be bitterly disappointed after succumbing to a 5-0 demolition at the hands of Fulham, merely days after a 2-1 comeback victory away at bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Still, Moyes will see a home tie against a Wolves side who have lost their last three away games as the perfect opportunity to bounce back and potentially move up to sixth.
Before their heavy defeat at fellow Londoners Fulham, West Ham were on a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions and were looking to build real momentum. The magnitude of the loss epitomised the inconsistency of the Irons, a trait Moyes will be keen to eradicate.
Despite being tipped by some as outsiders for relegation, Wolverhampton Wanderers have dispelled these claims, currently occupying 13th position, 10 points clear of 18th-place Luton Town.
The appointment of Gary O'Neill bewildered many, with the 40-year-old having been sacked by Bournemouth at the end of the last campaign. However, O'Neill has implemented his style of play, making Wolves disciplined and hard to beat.
He would, however, ideally like to be pushing higher up the table—something they may be doing if many decisions hadn't gone against them. A 1-0 win against Burnley and a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at home has given them a nice platform to build off after back-to-back losses prior, and they will be hoping for a positive result on Sunday to push them towards the top half.
Recent encounters between these sides have shown how tightly matched they've been over the years. Last year saw Wolves win 1-0 at the Molineux, a few months after West Ham had silenced them 2-0 at the London Stadium. The season before this saw both home sides win 1-0. There has not been much to separate the sides these past few seasons.
However, in the 2020/2021 season, The Hammers completed the double over Wolves, winning 2-3 and 4-0, exacting revenge on The Wanderers who beat them 2-0 twice the previous season.
As previously mentioned, the last four games between these sides have been tight, with BTTS no and Under 2.5 goals landing in these games. There has also been lower than 5 cards in every game. However, we are disregarding H2H form and our bet is BTTS.
Having looked at the statistics and previous games, I am favouring West Han to emerge victorious on Sunday.
Due to West Ham's home form, they are rightly favourites for this match. With the aforementioned statistical highlights, a 2-1 West Ham win @ 10.00 presents value.
With BTTS landing in 13/16 games (81%) for both teams, they rank joint second in the league for this metric, behind Brighton who boast a perfect BTTS record.
Wolves have lost 2-1 twice this season already, with West Ham winning by this scoreline on three occasions. We are backing them to do the same again on Sunday.
