The round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup continues on Monday with two mouthwatering ties. Portugal take on pre-tournament favourites Spain while co-hosts USA continue their quest for glory against Belgium. Portugal fought back to beat Croatia late on in the last round but will face a Spain side that is growing in confidence after a 3-0 win over Austria.

In the late match, USA will have to go to war without their star striker, yet the Red Devils haven't been overly convincing from round one this World Cup. Will the co-hosts continue to deliver in their own back yard?

Portugal vs Spain

Portugal survived a scare against Croatia to come back from behind to win 2-1 - while having VAR to thank for ruling out a late equaliser deep into added time. And while Portugal remain unbeaten at the 2026 World Cup, their performances haven't been entirely convincing aside from their comfortable win over Uzbekistan in round two.

Portugal may have beaten Croatia, but they only managed three shots on goal across the 90 minutes - they will need to be much better against Spain if they are to progress.

Why? Because Spain are elite. They may have drawn against Cape Verde, but they have had their "Saudi Arabia" moment and after four matches, they have yet to concede a single goal. Although Austria were poor, Spain dominated the match from start to finish and looked a lot more assertive in the final third compare to certain group matches.

Mikel Oyarzabal has four goals to his name this tournament and is still within a shot of the golden boot - and he has led the line superbly. With Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Alex Baena in behind, Spain have found their mojo at the tournament has progressed and with all the attention on France, they might be going slightly under the radar.

Portugal were second best against Colombia and didn't cause DR Congo many issues during the group stage, and that certainly gives Spain the advantage. After a sluggish performance in round one, they have kicked on and the European champions look capable of producing a big result - sending a statement to both France and Argentina. Ronaldo, it might be time to go home.

With that in mind, I'm sticking up Spain to win at 10/11 with BetMGM.

USA vs Belgium

USA breezed past Bosnia with a 2-0 win in the round of 32 but it came at a price. Forward Folarin Balogun, who has scored three World Cup goals, was sent off in the second half and Mauricio Pochettino will need to rethink his strategy against Belgium.

The Red Devils squeezed past Senegal in extra-time - and perhaps they were fortunate once more. Senegal were leading 2-0 with only minutes left on the clock but completely fell apart and allowed Belgium back into the match.

Some might praise Belgium for their comeback but those who watched can only blame Senegal for poor game management in the last 15 minutes.

Belgium have only kept one clean sheet from four attempts this summer, which came in a 0-0 draw vs Iran, and it's fair to say they have been massively underwhelming. A blend of young talent and old shows they are going through a transitional phase, and although clearly capable of scoring, they do not look like a strong defensive unit.

And although USA will be without Balogun, Pochettino's squad is confidence, direct and have shown resilience at this World Cup. Even without Balogun, the Argentine can rely on Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Malik Tillman in the final third.

They will be in a confident mood against a poor Belgian side, and this could be yet another US game that opens up.
