The round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup continues on Tuesday where the reigning champions Argentina are back in action looking to avoid any shock result vs Egypt. Cape Verde sprung a surprise in the last round, and Lionel Scaloni's side required extra time to secure their spot in the next round. In the later match, Argentina's Copa America finalists Colombia will look to set up a rematch against Lionel Messi as they take on Switzerland.
Our World Cup tipster Nathan Joyes provides his best bets from these two matches. Read his World Cup tips below.
Argentina survived a real scare against Cape Verde. They haven't been the only nation to struggle against the debutants, but it was a warning that Argentina must try and see out games and not relax on narrow scorelines. Argentina are experts when it comes to winning matches and under 3.5 goals, with 10 of their last 15 settling as winners.
They are a nation that knows how to break down defences and then keep hold of the ball and make life difficult for their opponents. This was the plan against Cape Verde but they failed to fire a second after a lethargic opening 45 minutes and were punished in the second period. Hopefully Lionel Scaloni learnt something else about his team, despite being in charge for eight years.
Egypt, on the other hand, relied on the lottery of the penalty shootout against Australia after drawing 1-1 with the Socceroos after 120 minutes. The Pharaohs have scored in all four matches, yet haven't been overly impressive. Draws vs an underwhelming Belgian outfit, as well 1-1 draws with Iran and Australia have shown defensive vulnerabilities that a nation like Argentina can exploit.
Lionel Messi's free role is making him impossible to pick up, while the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Thiago Almada pulling the strings in behind have enough quality to make sure Egypt do not pick up a clean sheet for a sixth match in a row.
Argentina know how to manage football matches at the highest level, yet possess so much quality in the final third they can strike when you least expect it. It might not be pretty, but there's too much firepower on show here and Egypt will do well to break down their defence after their inevitable dressing down from Scaloni.
With that in mind, I'm sticking up Argentina and under 3.5 at 20/21 with BetMGM.
Colombia are quietly going about their business at the World Cup and they are emerging as a real threat. After fighting off Portugal to finish top of their group, they did enough to beat Ghana 1-0. It was a real defensive, back to the walls performance from the Black Stars, yet Colombia never looked as though they were walking away without the win inside 90 minutes.
Luis Diaz once again had a goal chalked off for offside, but he was the star of the show and nations are struggling to contain Bayern's forward. But it's not just all about Diaz. Daniel Munoz, Jhon Arias and Luis Suarez have offered plenty in the final third, while Gustavo Puerta has been a real unsung hero in the middle of the park.
Nestor Lorenzo's side attack in numbers and with intensity, yet this is a team with real chemistry and it shows on the pitch. From front to back, this is a real unit and their pace and power should carry them to victory here.
Switzerland overcame a weak looking group despite drawing 1-1 with Qatar and then brushed Algeria to one side in the round of 32 with a 2-0 win. Yet their intensity appears to be lacking, and against a nation that plays quickly and directly through the middle or on the wings, the Europeans may struggle to deal with it across the 90 minutes.
Colombia bring plenty of support to their matches, almost making it a home game, and they can deal with the heat better than most. Switzerland are rated within Europe, but haven't shown a performance that will worry their opponents just yet. Colombia will be eyeing up a quarter-final tie with Argentina, and they can score through any one of their attackers and achieve that dream.
Therefore, I'm happy to stick up Colombia to win at 5/4 with BetMGM.
Argentina vs Egypt: Argentina and under 3.5 at 20/21
Switzerland vs Colombia: Colombia to win at 5/4
