2026 World Cup Group E Betting Guide

Publish Date: 05/05/2026
Fact checked by: Jordan Noble

Germany kickstart their World Cup campaign against Curacao in Houston, while Ecuador and Ivory Coast will meet in Philadelphia. All of Group E’s matches will be played in the US, which also includes Kansas City and New Jersey.

There’s little surprise to see that Germany are the group favourites with Betfred but there’s competition in behind from both Ivory Coast and Ecuador. Curacao - who will play in their first ever World Cup - are the clear underdogs as they look to create history this summer.

So will it be a walk in the park for the Germans? Or will either their African or South American opponents throw a spanner in the works? Nathan Joyes will be giving his World Cup betting predictions throughout the tournament on all World Cup betting markets and is on hand to discuss the four nations in Group D.

Group E Team analysis

Germany

Germany won all but one of their World Cup qualifiers, making rather light work of an easy group. There was a scare early on when Slovakia beat them 2-0 but Julian Nagelsmann’s side returned the favour with a 6-0 victory back in Leipzig.

The four-time World champions haven’t been tipped by many to come out on top in the US - but they certainly have the players that are capable of having a deep run in the competition.

Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade scored four during the qualifiers, while Serge Gnabry weighed in with three and Leroy Sane - now at Galatasaray - bagged a brace vs Slovakia.

Their defence is protected by Bayern’s experienced Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic - two of the best in the business - while Joshua Kimmich tucked in behind provides Germany with leadership.

This may be a side that suffered a couple of defeats in the Nations League back in 2025, but it would be foolish to write them off too soon.

Ecuador

Ecuador will have plenty of supporters at the World Cup. This is a nation that only conceded five goals in 18 World Cup qualifiers thanks to its tight knit defence. At home, they let in three in nine. They do have a strong altitude advantage in Quito, but their largely European-based back line has the capability to perform anywhere in the world.

Pervis Estupinan, Piero Hincapie, Willian Pacho, Joel Ordonez and Angelo Preciado is an elite defence. Moises Caicedo in front will also be their engine in the middle. This is why they haven’t lost a single match since 2024 (Brazil 1-0).

La Tri’s problem lies further forward. Enner Valencia - now with Pachuca - is 36. Tucked in behind will be Gonzalo Plata. The Flamengo forward has shown glimpses of his talent but reports of his behaviour away from the pitch has stifled his progress on it. Kendry Paez is on loan at River Plate, and is another that could use the World Cup stage to showcase his talent, having impressed since making his debut at just 16.

Ivory Coast

AFCON quarter-finalists Ivory Coast aren’t heading to the US just to make up the numbers. A friendly vs France at the beginning of May will tell us more, but two wins to nil against South Korea and Scotland are steps in the right direction.

Both nations aren’t as good as Germany or Ecuador, but banking clean sheets would have impressed head coach Emerse Faé. If Ivory Coast are to win football matches at the World Cup they are going to have to lean on their experience - and there’s plenty of that in the middle of the park.

Nottingham Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare and Al Ahli’s Franck Kessie will be hard to break down. And in front of them, Man United’s Amad Diallo has often performed better for his country than club. Perhaps on the other flank is where the African nation will feel as though they can really hurt other teams.

Yan Diomande (19) has over 20 goal contributions for Leipzig this season and his performances will be crucial to their success this summer.

Curacao

Curacao are making their debut at the World Cup and although expected to be the whipping boys in Group E, they more than deserve their place here after finishing above Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

The level of their ability, however, was put to the test in the recent FIFA Series. Curacao lost 2-0 against China - a nation that once again failed to qualify for the World Cup - and 5-1 vs Australia - a country not expected to pull up any trees this summer.

With no players within their squad playing at a high level in Europe regularly, this expanded World Cup has allowed smaller nations an opportunity to play at a World Cup. However, Curacao’s group looks a tough one and they could well head home with zero points and zero goals.

World Cup Group E Betting Tips

Group winner: Germany at 1/4 with Betfred

It’s hard to look past the Germans to come out on top and win Group E. Whether or not they go on to win this tournament, Nagelsmann’s side is stacked with experienced, talented players across the park that are pound-for-pound better than their three opponents. If you want to bet on the Fifa World Cup you can currently get World Cup odds of 1/4 on Germany to top Group E.

If Germany do win the group then they will face one of the best third placed teams in the round of 32. This could be from a selection of groups, but keep an eye on how group F is looking as well as groups A, B, C and D to get insights on betting on the next round.

Qualifiers & longshot team to watch: Ecuador

If Germany are to fall short, expect Ecuador to pounce and prosper. La Tri are one of the most disciplined nations heading to the World Cup and they currently have little to no injuries to worry about less than two months away.

Admittedly, Ecuador haven’t scored as many as they’d have liked - but that hasn’t stopped them from winning football matches. They beat Colombia in their own back yard 1-0 during qualifying and beat world champions Argentina as recently as September 2025 by the same scoreline.

Four years ago in Qatar, Ecuador failed to qualify after losing to Senegal but will arrive in the US with a more settled side that looks capable of causing an upset or two along the way.

But with a defence as solid as Ecuador’s, if they don’t concede, they won’t lose football matches. And if the likes of Kevin Rodriguez, Gonzalo Plata and Enner Valencia take their opportunities, Ecuador could be the team at this World Cup to soak up pressure and hurt other nations on the counter.

Head coach Sebastián Beccacece has experience managing Argentina’s Under-20s and worked previously as Chile’s assistant, and the 45-year-old is using that to mould Ecuador into one of the more intriguing teams in South America.

With a young, hungry manager in charge of this experienced side, there’s no reason why La Tri can’t outperform their 80/1 price - and push Germany all the way for top spot while they are at it. Although Germany are strong favourites, which teams the bookies fancy to go deep
aren't always the sides that progress. So if you are claiming any World Cup betting welcome offers, backing Ecuador to qualify would be a good bet.
