Canada v Bosnia & Herzegovina - Ivan Sunjic to be Carded (12/5)

Bosnia & Herzegovina commit over 15 fouls per game under Sergej Barbarez and, with Jesse Marsch’s Canada playing such an intense, high-pressing style, referee Facundo Tello could be a busy man on Friday.

Ivan Sunjic gives away more free-kicks than anyone else expected to start at BMO Field and has racked up double-figure yellow card totals in each of the last three seasons.

The Canadians draw plenty of fouls in midfield areas, so Sunjic looks likely to be involved. Referee Tello has shown 42 yellow cards across nine games in Argentina this year, so there’s little reason to think he’ll hesitate if Sunjic becomes a persistent offender.

Canada v Bosnia & Herzegovina - Canada Over 12.5 Fouls (4/5)

Canada are not far behind their European opponents in average fouls count, committing around 14 per game themselves. This is no ordinary fixture either, with the hosts opening their World Cup campaign in front of a home crowd.

With that in mind, over 12.5 looks well within reach against a Bosnia & Herzegovina side that wins more than a dozen free-kicks per match.

Edin Dzeko remains a handful up front, even at 40 years old, and is still drawing 1.93 fouls per 90 under Barbarez.

Full-back Amar Dedic is another who does a good job of winning free-kicks for his side, while centre-backs Tarik Muharemovic and Nikola Katic also contribute in that area

USA v Paraguay - Paraguay Over 3.5 Shots on Target (11/10)

There are some concerns around the USA defensively. Chris Richards only returned to full training on Monday after tearing two ligaments in his left ankle while playing for Crystal Palace on May 17, an injury that ruled him out of the Americans’ two warm-up friendlies.

Beyond Richards and 38-year-old Tim Ream, there is a noticeable drop in quality at centre-back, while the goalkeeper position remains another area of uncertainty. Matt Freese does not carry the same pedigree as some of the USA goalkeepers seen at previous World Cups.

Paraguay should fancy testing both Freese and the defence in front of him. Their line of 4.5 shots on target sits close to their usual output, but recent performances suggest they are capable of clearing it comfortably. Fifteen on target against Nicaragua may need to be taken with caution, but seven against Morocco during the March international window and another seven against Mexico in the previous break are far more encouraging indicators.

USA v Paraguay - Diego Gomez to be Carded (13/5)

Premier League fans will be familiar with Diego Gomez and the aggressive ball-winning style that regularly sees him post high tackle and foul numbers.

That approach can land him in trouble at times, though. He was sent off for Paraguay against Bolivia during World Cup qualifying and there were plenty who felt one of his 10 yellow cards for Brighton last season could easily have been upgraded after a reckless challenge on Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz.

Averaging 2.09 fouls per 90 minutes, Gomez is rarely far from the action and, much like Sunjic for Bosnia & Herzegovina, he looks overpriced in the card market on Friday.

Day two’s acca focuses on teams and players whose styles should naturally create betting opportunities, whether that’s through fouls, cards or attacking output.

Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina both commit plenty of fouls, and that combination could make for a stop-start contest in Toronto, bringing Sunjic’s card line and Canada’s team fouls total into play. Later in the day, the USA’s defensive questions create an opportunity to side with Paraguay’s shot volume, while Gomez’s combative style makes his booking price appeal.
