World Cup 2026 moves into day seven on Wednesday, as attention turns to the final two groups yet to get underway, meaning every nation in the tournament will have played once by the end of the night.
Throughout the tournament, Ben Smith will provide our World Cup betting tips and previews in the form of a daily acca using BetMGM odds, looking beyond match results and goal lines to focus on player and team stats, disciplinary markets and other alternative angles.
Tuesday saw several of the tournament’s biggest names make an immediate impact, with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland both scoring twice while Lionel Messi once again produced on the world stage. England will now hope Harry Kane can make a similarly fast start.
Group K opens in Houston as Portugal face DR Congo before attention switches to Group L, where England begin against Croatia in Arlington and Ghana meet Panama in Toronto. The day then concludes back in Group K as Uzbekistan take on Colombia in Mexico City.
With every remaining nation making its tournament bow, there is one final opportunity to attack opening-match markets before qualification scenarios begin shaping the betting.
DR Congo have done an excellent job of getting here, but their success has been built far more on discipline and defensive resilience than sustained attacking output. They are generally content to stay compact, protect central areas and wait for moments rather than commit numbers forward.
That approach could make creating chances difficult against Portugal. Roberto Martínez’s side are comfortable dominating possession and controlling territory, while their midfield is one of the strongest and most technical in the tournament. Even if Portugal are not flawless, they rarely allow opponents long spells with the ball.
DR Congo also tend to rely on efficiency over volume in the final third and with transitions likely to be limited here, under 7.5 shots appeals as a line they may struggle to clear.
Anthony Gordon laid on an assist for Declan Rice in England’s final warm-up match against Costa Rica and may just have done enough to earn the nod on Wednesday ahead of Marcus Rashford.
Gordon and Rice combined well throughout that game and, if the former is selected, that combination feels like one England could look to exploit again in an attempt to break Croatia down.
Under Thomas Tuchel, Gordon is averaging 1.2 key passes per 90 and his shooting output has been impressive too at 3.26 efforts per 90. He also got on the scoresheet from the penalty spot against Costa Rica after finding the net against Latvia during qualifying.
If he starts, the price on Gordon to score or assist looks big.
Panama look worth siding with as underdogs in the shots on target market because this is unlikely to be an open game. Under Thomas Christiansen they tend to keep matches compact, defend their box well and make opponents work for openings.
That could suit them against a Ghana side still adapting to change and missing some of their most important attacking players. There is enough uncertainty around Ghana’s attack that they may not generate the sort of dominance the prices imply.
Panama are limited going forward but they do create moments, particularly on the break and from dead-ball situations, and that may be enough to give this a real chance.
Luis Diaz is a big reason to get behind a Farrukh Sayfiev card here. Colombia’s left winger draws 2.34 fouls per 90 and is at his most dangerous when isolating defenders and repeatedly attacking the outside.
That is not ideal for Sayfiev, who already carries one of the more aggressive defensive profiles in this Uzbekistan side. The right wing-back commits more than two fouls per 90 and his recent discipline record underlines the risk, having collected two yellows and a red across his last four international starts.
Uzbekistan are likely to spend long periods without the ball here and will need to stay compact to contain Colombia’s wide threats. That could leave Sayfiev exposed in repeated defensive situations and makes his price to be booked appealing.
Wednesday’s acca is built around a mix of game state and individual matchups. Portugal should control territory, Gordon looks primed to make an impact if selected, Panama may be more competitive than the market expects and Sayfiev faces one of the tougher defensive assignments on this slate.
Put together, the four selections combine for a 41/1 World Cup acca with BetMGM.
