World Cup Accumulator Tips

We’re set for day eight of the 2026 World Cup, and attention turns to the second round of group matches, where qualification scenarios begin to emerge.

Throughout the tournament, Ben Smith will provide our World Cup betting tips and previews in the form of a daily acca using BetMGM odds, focusing on player and team statistics, disciplinary markets, shots and other alternative angles rather than traditional match betting.

We already have a reasonable idea of where these teams stand after their opening performances, but circumstances now begin to change. Some can put one foot in the knockout rounds, while others are already approaching must-not-lose territory.

Thursday starts with Czechia against South Africa in Atlanta before Switzerland meet Bosnia and Herzegovina in Inglewood. Canada then face Qatar in Vancouver, with Mexico against South Korea rounding off the schedule in Zapopan.

Czech Republic v South Africa - Pavel Sulc Over 0.5 Shots on Target (17/20)

I included a Pavel Sulc shot on target in my opening-day World Cup acca, and it landed thanks to BetMGM’s Golden Sub offer, with Adam Hlozek coming off the bench and obliging.

I’m happy to go back to the same market for Czechia’s second game and, while having Golden Sub on side again is no bad thing, there is a fair chance the Lyon man gets the job done himself this time.

Sulc was below his usual level in the defeat to South Korea, but South Africa may present a more suitable matchup. Bafana Bafana probably need to win to keep realistic hopes of progressing alive, and that could leave more space than Czechia saw in their opener.

South Africa lost defensive discipline against Mexico and repeatedly allowed the co-hosts to play through them. If they again hold an aggressive line at the wrong moments, Sulc has the movement and quality to take advantage and get an effort on target.

Switzerland v Bosnia & Herzegovina - Bosnia & Herzegovina Over 8.5 Shots (5/6)

Bosnia and Herzegovina will probably have taken their point against Canada before kick-off, although having led for close to an hour, there may still be some frustration at not seeing the game out.

The draw between Switzerland and Qatar leaves Group B nicely poised, though, and means defeat here would leave the loser with very little margin for error heading into the final round.

With this game taking place before Canada face Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot afford to play for scenarios later in the day. If they fall behind against a Switzerland side expected to have more of the ball, I’d expect Sergej Barbarez’s team to open up and chase the game.

They managed only eight shots against Canada but spent most of that match protecting a lead. Their usual output is comfortably higher, and they have recently cleared this line against the likes of Italy, Wales and Austria, making over 8.5 worth a look.

Canada v Qatar - Ismael Kone Over 1.5 Shots (39/20)

Having backed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s shots line, I was tempted to go down the same route with Canada for similar reasons, but 17.5 feels a little too aggressive and is probably best left alone.

Those efforts still need to come from somewhere though and Ismael Kone appeals to contribute a couple of his own.

The Sassuolo midfielder is one of Canada’s more progressive players and often carries the ball into areas where he is willing to shoot. He averages 1.41 efforts per 90 at international level and chipped in with six Serie A goals last season.

If Canada find themselves needing to break Qatar down, Kone is the type to take responsibility and try his luck.

Mexico v South Korea - Most Cards: Draw (49/20)

By winning on matchday one, both Mexico and South Korea have put themselves in a position where a point here would leave qualification pretty much secured.

The market reflects that with the draw short in the match result betting, but I’d rather play a draw in the most cards market at a bigger price.

Neither side should feel much need to force the issue. Avoiding defeat keeps them in excellent shape and there may be more value in conserving energy than turning this into an intense 90 minutes.

That could lead to a fairly controlled game with limited flashpoints. One card each, or even neither side collecting any at all, feels entirely plausible. Card counts have been low across this tournament so far, perhaps partly due to conditions but also because referees have generally been more forgiving since the three red cards on opening day.

Thursday’s acca combines some different angles as permutations start to factor into the thinking. Sulc gets a match-up that should allow him to flourish, Bosnia and Herzegovina may be forced into a higher shot count, Canada’s expected territory can create chances for Kone, and Mexico against South Korea has the feel of a game where neither side will want to expend unnecessary energy and pick up cards.
